Bintulu Port officially becomes Sarawak state port
BINTULU Port has officially transitioned from a federal port to a state port under the jurisdiction of the Sarawak government, effective Sept 1, Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) said.
The transition followed the coming into force of the Declaration of an Area in the Bintulu District to be a Federal Port (Repeal) Act 2024 and the Bintulu Port Authority (Dissolution) Act 2024.
BPHB said its wholly owned subsidiary Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd (BPSB) has been approved in principle by the Sarawak government as the port operator under the Port Authorities Ordinance 1961.
BPSB’s operations, management and development of the port are currently governed by a Heads of Agreement dated July 27 between the Sarawak government, Bintulu Port Authority (Sarawak) and BPSB, pending execution of the Port Operation Concession Agreement.
The previous federal privatisation and operating arrangements ceased to have effect from Sept 1.
BPHB said the transition will not affect day-to-day operations or the continuity of services to customers and port users, with BPSB continuing as the port operator under the state regulatory framework.
The group said the transition will have no material impact on its earnings, net assets, share capital or shareholdings for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2026. — TMR
