KUCHING (March 9): The Kuching Waterfront came alive Saturday evening as Iftar Perdana 2.0 kicked off in a vibrant atmosphere of unity in the holy month of Ramadan.

The programme, organised by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) in collaboration with the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS), brought together some 3,000 visitors who gathered with family and friends to share a meaningful moment of togetherness.

Held at the city’s iconic waterfront, the event featured a variety of engaging activities to enliven the spirit of Ramadan.

Highlights included a children’s colouring competition and the distribution of ‘iftar’ (break-of-fast) dishes such as ‘bubur lambuk’, ‘bubur pedas’, ‘bubur Asyura’, and assorted traditional cakes.

More than just a community gathering, this year’s Iftar Perdana also served as a platform for collaboration between the private sector, government agencies, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

In addition, MIS distributed 5,000 packs of ‘bubur Asyura’, while Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad contributed 3,000 assorted traditional cakes and beverages.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Batu Lintang branch provided 1,000 packs of ‘bubur pedas’, and Maggi Malaysia prepared 1,000 packs of bubur lambuk for the attendees.

Support also came from Affin Bank and Mahashafi Restaurant, which sponsored dinner meal packs.

Attendees lay out their mats to prepare for ‘iftar’ at Kuching Waterfront.

The packed meals were distributed by Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, MIS president Datuk Misnu Taha, and Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Hilmy Othman.

Visitors began arriving as early as 4pm, securing their spots at the waterfront, laying out mats, and setting up tents in preparation for the outdoor ‘iftar’ session.

Adding a unique experience to this year’s programme was the introduction of ‘Ramadan Glamping’, offering a relaxed yet exclusive setting for visitors to enjoy their ‘iftar’ comfortably while taking in the scenic view of the Sarawak River.

Visitors enjoy the outdoor atmosphere with friends and loved ones while waiting for time to break the fast.

Food and beverage trucks were also set up near the Square Tower at the Kuching Waterfront, further enhancing the lively atmosphere.

As the call to Maghrib prayer blared in the air, families and friends shared a quiet moment of gratitude while breaking their fast together.
