KUCHING: The Federal Government is confident that the Sarawak Government has the expertise and capability to operate Bintulu Port following its transfer from federal to state control.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the port was a key facility, particularly for the country's liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry and the wider Asian region.

"Sarawak today has the capability to manage and operate the port, with many experienced personnel in place," he said at the Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak 2026 dinner here today.

"The handover of Bintulu Port by the Federal Government is also a sign of our confidence and friendship," he added.

The cheque handover ceremony marking the transfer of Bintulu Port from federal to state status was held in Bintulu today and was also attended by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

On May 20, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the Federal Government had agreed to transfer Bintulu Port to the state government at a cost of RM1.8 billion.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said he wanted Petronas and Petros to work closely as partners in developing the nation's oil and gas sector.

He said both sides must respect respective state and federal laws in order to reach a fair agreement.

"Datuk Seri Abang Johari and I have emphasised to Petronas and Petros the need to focus on common interests and work together. We want a win-win outcome. There is a huge opportunity, and we want this resolved fairly and justly," he said.

"I hope the agreement between Petronas and Petros can be finalised soon," he added.
