BINTULU: Sarawak made history in the logistics and maritime sector as Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd (SIPSB) becomes the first port terminal in the state to implement a ‘Smart Barrier Gate’ system based on cutting-edge technology.
The launch ceremony of the system was officiated by Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Majang Renggi, at the Samalaju Industrial Port on Wednesday.
According to him, the implementation of this system marks a significant leap forward in positioning Sarawak as a pioneer of smart ports in the region.
“The integration of technologies such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Artificial Image Recording (AIR), License Plate Recognition (LPR), and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a strategic move to enhance port operational efficiency,” he said.
He added that the system not only strengthens security controls and accelerates logistics processes, but also reduces human error and reinforces Sarawak’s position as a competitive regional logistics hub.
Meanwhile, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd, Ruslan Abdul Gani, said that the development of the system within just 17 months since February 2024 reflects SIPSB’s commitment to embracing digital transformation in the port sector.
“SIPSB has achieved a remarkable milestone as the first port in Sarawak to utilize a smart barrier system based on four core technologies that function simultaneously within a smart ecosystem,” he said.
He explained that OCR technology enables automatic container number identification, AIR ensures accurate cargo recognition, LPR expedites access for registered vehicles, while RFID manages comprehensive user security and verification.
All these technologies are integrated into a unified system, making port operations more efficient, secure, and user-friendly.
The launch ceremony also included an operational briefing for Majang, followed by a symbolic ribbon-cutting at the automated barrier system area to mark the official inauguration.
With the implementation of this system, SIPSB is expected to continue serving as a key driver in the development of Sarawak’s smart logistics and maritime transport sector, further strengthening the state’s position within the regional digital economy network.
