BINTULU: The introduction of the Bravery Medal at the Special Olympics Malaysia 6th National Games Sarawak 2026 symbolises recognition of the courage shown by athletes with special needs who dare to challenge themselves and step onto the competitive stage.
Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the recognition is awarded to all athletes as a mark of appreciation for their effort and fighting spirit, regardless of competition results.
“The introduction of the Bravery Medal carries very special meaning as it is presented to all athletes as a symbol of their courage to try.
“In line with the Special Olympics oath, every participation is an achievement and every effort deserves to be celebrated,” she said.
She said this at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics Malaysia 6th National Games Sarawak 2026 at Dewan Suarah Bintulu on Saturday.
According to her, the athletes’ courage to step into the arena, challenge themselves beyond their comfort zones, and give their best represents a true victory that goes beyond any medal or competition outcome.
She added that the Special Olympics platform not only provides opportunities for athletes with special needs to improve their physical fitness, but also helps build self-confidence, demonstrate courage, and experience the spirit of friendship within an inclusive community.
“Through continuous training and participation in competitions at various levels, athletes are not only able to showcase their potential, but also strengthen their confidence and capabilities in their daily lives,” she said.
At the same time, she emphasised that organising such a sporting event has a broader impact, as it helps educate society to be more open-minded, compassionate, and accepting of diverse abilities.
The Special Olympics Malaysia National Games 2026, held in Bintulu from April 24 to 26, involved the participation of hundreds of athletes from across the country, competing in various sporting events.
Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian and his wife Datin Amar Enn Ong Siew Ean, Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (Community Wellbeing Development) Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam, Organising Chairman of the Special Olympics Malaysia National Games and Chairman of the Special Olympics Bintulu Chapter Dato Ruslan Abdul Ghani, as well as other guests. - UKASnews
