BINTULU: Sarawak has marked a new milestone in the logistics and maritime sector as Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn. Bhd. (SIPSB) becomes the first port terminal in the state to implement a cutting-edge Smart Barrier Gate system.
The launch ceremony of the system was officiated by Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Dato Majang Renggi at the Samalaju Industrial Port, here, on Wednesday.
According to him, the implementation of the system is a major leap towards establishing Sarawak as a regional leader in smart port development.
“The integration of technologies such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Artificial Image Recording (AIR), License Plate Recognition (LPR), and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a strategic measure in improving the efficiency of port operations,” he said.
He added that the system not only strengthens security control and expedites logistics processes but also reduces human error and reinforces Sarawak’s position as a competitive regional logistics hub.
Meanwhile, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad, Ruslan Abdul Gani said the development of the system in just 17 months since February 2024 reflects SIPSB's commitment to the digital transformation of the port sector.
"SIPSB has achieved a proud achievement as the first port in Sarawak to use a smart barrier system based on four key technologies that work simultaneously in a smart ecosystem," he said.
He explained that OCR technology allows container numbers to be automatically identified, AIR ensures accurate cargo identification, LPR speeds up access for registered vehicles, while RFID oversees user authentication and security comprehensively.
All of these technologies are integrated, thus making port operations more efficient, safe and user-friendly.
The launch ceremony was followed by a briefing on operations, and a symbolic ribbon-cutting at the automated barrier system site to mark the official launch.
