Bintulu Port to harness AI, robotics for future-ready operations
26 Nov 2025

BINTULU: Bintulu Port is accelerating its transformation into a smart and green port with the introduction of new technologies, including autonomous drones, a ‘Smart Gate’ system, and next-generation port operations platforms.

Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said the initiative aligns with Malaysia’s aspiration to become an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Nation by 2030.

“Today is not just a celebration, but a declaration that we are ready to embrace the future, where technology and sustainability go hand in hand to drive national prosperity.

“Most importantly, it positions Malaysia, particularly Sarawak, to lead the era of smart, green, and digital infrastructure,” he said during the launch of Bintulu Port Digital Day 2025 on Tuesday (Nov 25).

Meanwhile, Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) president and group CEO Datuk Ruslan Abdul Ghani said the port is entering a phase of digital acceleration with the aim of becoming a Fully Integrated Operations Port by 2026.

“The first target in our framework is to become a Fully Integrated Operations Port by 2026, where all systems are seamlessly connected and data flows in real-time.

“Our next aspiration is to become a Fully Digital Port by 2030, streamlining and automating processes to reduce bottlenecks, increase productivity, and deliver superior services.”

Ruslan said the commitment also includes transforming the port into a Fully Automated Port by 2050, leveraging advanced robotics, AI, and autonomous systems to enhance efficiency, safety, and productivity.

“With the current pace of progress, this target may even be achieved sooner.”

He shared that autonomous drones could replace the operations of three patrol boats while covering a wider area, and the ‘Smart Gate’ system has reduced truck entry time from 15 minutes to just a few seconds. - Sarawak Tribune
